Description – The hand-carved Zuni Black Onyx Bear Fetish is embellished with a Turquoise Fish. Animal Totems have been part of most religions. The Turquoise and Onyx in the Focal Bear are repeated in a symmetrical pattern throughout this necklace. Also included are tiny Turquoise Heishi Beads which blend nicely with the larger stone. Swarovski Crystals are included in ebony to accent and contrast to the bright blue of the Turquoise Beads. Even the Hook and Eye Clasp includes a Faceted Black Onyx Stone in the continuing theme. Sterling Silver Rounds and Bali Elements finish this piece.
Other information – Fetishes were commonly used in Native American Religious Practices. The Bear Totem represents strength and introspection. Most carvers have learned their skills from family members. Onyx was once carved into Roman Reliefs and is said to be a stone of protection and repelling negativity. Black Onyx is a black “Chalcedon” that was carved by the Romans in a negative relief. The name comes from the Greek word for “finger” or “claw”. Natural Onyx is found in South America and India. It is said to be a stone of protection. Turquoise is the French name for “Turkish stone”. It occurs naturally in shades ranging from sky blue to grey-green in locations where copper is found in the soil. Turquoise has been mined since ancient days in Egypt. It is found in China, Peru, Mexico, Iran, Tiber, Australia, and USA. The stone promotes courage, money, love, friendship, and luck.
